10 Cloverfield Lane

The Joxer Film Review of 10 Cloverfield Lane

This is a difficult film to review without giving away spoilers but I shall try my best..

Following an argument and leaving her boyfriend,Michelle [Mary Elizabeth Winstead] is involved in a car crash and finds herself injured and tied up in a basement [nuclear] bunker being treated by a man called Howard [John Goodman] who tells her that there has been an “unknown world event” outisde and due to the danger of chemical warfare that she can not leave the bunker for at least a year. Also in the bunker injured is Emmett [John Gallagher Jr],another survivor who witnessed the attack on Earth and managed to take shelter with Howard. After a while of being treated for her injuries Michelle is allowed to join Howard and Emmett in the living quarters of the bunker to live and eat.During a meal,a still unconvinced Michelle steals Howard’s keys and tries to escape but finds a woman with wounds on her face banging on the door trying to get in and stops in her tracks as the woman dies in front of her.Is Howard telling the truth about having to stay in the bunker for her own safety or is there something more sinister going on inside [and out]..?

If you are expecting this film to be like the original Cloverfield you may be disappointed for this is more like Room meets Misery than Godzilla. It’s more like a Psychological thriller than a monster movie..

John Goodman plays his role superbly, you never quite know from which direction his character is coming from and Mary Elizabeth Winstead is a fine heroine of the film. You get a real sense of claustrophobia watching this as the story unravels and all is revealed and at times it does become “sweaty palms” as you wonder what will happen next to the 3 characters..

It is a good film but probably not the film you are expecting when you take your seat, some may be disappointed by it if they are expecting something else..

Joxer Film Rating 8/10
