Starring Johnny Depp,Helena Bonham-Carter and Mia Wasikowska as Alice, this film is the follow-up to the incredibly successful 2010 film Alice in Wonderland and is loosely based on the Lewis Carroll book of the same name.
Alice [who is a successful captain on her fathers ship “The Wonder”] has travelled the known world and comes home to find that her family has been swindled out of their possessions. She then encounters Absolem who tells her that she needs to find The Mad Hatter [Depp] as time is running out.Alice then follows Absolem through the mirror in into Wonderland where she discovers that all is not well in the land for The Hatter has discovered a family artefact feared lost and is in a state of depression.Alice agrees to go back in time and change the past so that The Hatter can be with his family but she needs to convince Time itself that she intends no harm.Little does she know that The Red Queen [Bonham-Carter] also has plans for turning back the hands of time using the same device that Alice needs so bringing forth the next confrontation of Alice and The Queen of Hearts..
Will Alice be able to save the Hatter and his family before the Red Queen alters time forever?
This is a fantastically visual film with excellent CGI and a gentle family friendly approach to story telling on the big screen. There is no in your face “boom, bang, crash” sequences, just a lovely story, told well, with excellent acting by Mia Wasikowska and a wonderfully OTT performance by Helena Bonham-Carter as the evil queen.Depp plays the Hatter admirably without being too annoying and there is an all round pleasantness to the whole thing.Even Sasha Baron Cohen reins it in as Time to compliment the film and doesn’t spoil it in any way..
We get the back story of how The Red Queen became the way she is and also the back story of The Mad Hatter’s family and how he became the way he is.
it’s a simply stunning film with plenty to keep everyone entertained, the kids will love Time’s little helpers and the CGI backgrounds and the adults will laugh at The Red Queen’s antics [“earthqauke!”].
I thoroughly recommend this film for a family viewing if you just want something visually beautiful and pleasant to watch, especially if you have seen the first film..
