The Joxer Film Review of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story..
Directed by Gareth Edwards [Godzilla] and starring Felicity Jones,Diego Luna,Ben Mendelson,Forrest Whittaker,Donnie Yen and Mads Mikkelson,Rogue One is the sequel to the prequels but a prequel to the original Star Wars films.
The film centres around Jyn Erso [Jones] the daughter of Galen Erso, the man responsible for designing the Imperial weapon known as The Death Star but unkown to the Empire Galen has installed a chink in their weapon.Galen sends details of this flaw to his old friend Saw Gerrera [Whittaker] who shows Jyn the message.Jyn and a bunch of misfits and renegades eventually set off to retrieve the plans from the heavily guarded Empire base and to give them to the Rebel Alliance..
The Star Wars franchise, now owned by Disney, has now released 2 films in the last 2 years and this is by far the better of the two.Unlike The Force Awakens which was a fantastic film in it’s own right, this film is an original story, not set within the well known series but an offshoot of how the Rebels get the Death Star plans and is a complete story with a beginning,a middle and an ending and what a story it is!
From the very beginning to the very end there is action galore with a script that delivers and characters that are strong and believable.Felicity Jones is excellent as Jyn as she slowly develops from a down-trodden young woman with no hope and grows into a leader of a small band of rebels that have nothing but hope.A strong support cast back her up all the way with wonderful contributions from Donnie Yen as a blind warrior with a catchphrase that will become forever associated with the franchise and K-2SO,a droid with sarcasm and wit oozing from its metal and who steals every single scene it is in.The action itself is fast paced as the story develops around it and the fight scenes are just incredible and the story is not afraid to go where other Star Wars films fear to tread, some of the best acion I have seen in a film in a very long time!
The CGI in this is astonishing, one character in particular is just completely amazing ,especially as the person it is portraying has been dead for nearly 2 decades in real life and the return of the biggest baddie in the universe will send chills down your spine.
The film will keep you engrossed from beginning to end and will keep everyone entertained whether they are a fan of the franchise or not,for this is not your usual Star Wars movie but a proper action movie in all senses of the word,an action film that delivers and with nods to films of yesteryear such as The Dirty Dozen,Kelly’s Heroes and Where Eagles Dare it is definitely putting the “war” into Star Wars..
Any drawbacks? there are plenty of cameo’s from characters long associated with the films and most are welcome,a few that aren’t though and are just thrown in for no apparent reason but for nostalgia but overall this is a truly stunning film that will leave you craving for more when the familiar end score plays.I came out of the screening battle-scarred and completely drained from it,it is one of the best action movies for many, many years and everything is on a grand scale and done brilliantly,it fits in perfectly between episodes 3 and 4 of the series..Episode 8 next year has some stiff competition to beat this!
Strong the Force is with this film…
