The Joxer Film Review of Star Wars:The Last Jedi
Written and directed by Rian Johnson and starring Mark Hamill,Daisy Ridley,John Boyega,Adam Driver,Oscar Isaac,Domhnall Gleeson and the late Carrie Fisher, Star Wars:The Last Jedi sees the First Order led by Supreme Leader Snoke [Andy Serkis] continuing their quest to wipe out the remaining pieces of the Rebel Alliance, led by Princess/General Leia whilst Rey [Daisy Ridley] seeks out the help of a reluctant Luke Skywalker [Mark Hamill].Will the Master Jedi return to help the rebels or is he now at the stage where he feels he’s failed in his training..?
Following almost straight on from the finale of Episode VII, Star Wars The Last Jedi is the next instalment in the new Disney owned franchise and this film takes no prisoners and is not afraid to break the mould in taking Star Wars into a whole new direction.Gone are the rather old-fashioned,predictable Star Wars storylines of girl needs boy’s help and the damsel in distress who can’t look after herself. Now we have the rather feisty Rey,the even more feisty Leia and newcomer Rose Tico [Kelly Marie Tran] who will take no crap from anyone and will show the boys exactly what they want and how to get it.
The plot and storyline flow effortlessly along, tying up all loose ends from The Force Awakens and opening our eyes to a new and magical universe and not just endless space battles that always end the same way.
Rian Johnson brings a freshness to the procedures with a visionary almost visceral feel to the film as the characters develop and the plot thickens.Daisy Ridley is fabulous as Rey. Gone is her plodding wooden dialogue of The Force Awakens, her character is now the driving force [pun intended] behind the film and she gives a stunning and believable performance as she learns the way of The Force whilst Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren confronts his inner demons and conflict within as the two sides of the same coin sort out their differences and learn their true paths in the galaxy.
The script is spot on,the special effects are amazing and the comedic moments hit the spot every time. The balance between Dark and Light is given equal time to develop throughout the film. You will be glued to the screen and drawn into all near 3 hours of what will become THE classic Star Wars film in years to come. This is the film now that all others will be compared to.Star Wars has grown up and is not now just a film series of space princess’ and space wizards.Everyone has a place and there is a place for everything in this galaxy, far, far away.
This film has a purpose,a new goal bringing with it a new hope and a fantastic new direction in the franchise. It’s also not afraid to step on a few short-sighted bigoted toes along the way either. There are loads of times in the film where the “wow factor” is cranked to the max and jaw dropping action scenes that will become iconic in years to come.
A must see for the family and on the biggest screen possible. It is a film that I wanted to watch again as soon as it ended.I even found myself starting to like Porgs too..
You will leave the cinema with an upbeat, euphoric stride in your step
It is a fitting finale for Carrie Fisher, she will be sadly missed..
The Force is Strong with this one..
